The World Cricketers’ Association (WCA) has suggested that the International Cricket Council (ICC) make structural changes to its economic model for the betterment of the game. The WCA represents international players from top nations; however, no Indian cricketer is part of the organisation.
ICC’s current revenue model
For the unaware, the ICC revised its revenue model in 2023. As per changes, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would receive $230 million (Rs 1960 crore) annually from 2024 to 2027. That would be about 38.50% of ICC’s annual earnings of $600 million (Rs 5140 crore).
The move was criticised at that time by many. Since no other full member of the total 11 had even been awarded a double-digit share. The associate members, more than 90, will get around $67.50 million (Rs 578 crore) per year.
Cut down BCCI’s revenue share & make structural changes, says WCA
According to ESPNcricinfo, the WCA wants the ICC to cut down BCCI’s revenue share from 40% (38.50 to be exact) to 10%. They have studied the current model and have found that 70% of the total revenue that ICC generates is earned in just three months of the year. Furthermore, they have found that the Big 3 (India, England, and Australia) nations shared 83% of the total revenue.
They suggest that the ICC form an interim independent global body that modernises how the world body views the game. WCA wishes to bring in a promotion and relegation system, not just in Tests but also in other formats of international cricket. There have been talks that ICC wishes to do the same, but only for red-ball cricket.
WCA wants to optimise the cricket calendar, which includes international and franchise cricket. By doing so, they think they can increase ICC’s revenue by $600 million (Rs 1713 crore) annually.
