England cricket team succumbed to a shocking 8-run defeat at the hands of Afghanistan that saw them being knocked out of Champions Trophy. Following the defeat, the UK media wasted no time in targeting captain Jos Buttler and coach Brendon McCullum, demanding their departure with immediate effect. Their disastrous CT 2025 campaign comes right after their 0-3 whitewash at the hands of India. With their exit from the marquee tournament, their horrific experience of playing in Asia since the start of 2024 has finally come to an end.

From the BBC, to The Sun, to the Wisden, the UK media unanimously called for Buttler’s resignation as England skipper. While the batter himself hinted at stepping down following the humiliating loss to Afghanistan, the media and the critics wasted no time in targeting him over the team’s lacklustre approach in Champions Trophy.
The Mail ran an opinion piece titled “Buttler must go now… the whiff of self-delusion has become too much.” The BBC followed suit, with a piece whose headline read “Replacing Buttler the sensible thing to do.” With England suffering their ninth defeat in ten games, former England captain Nasser Hussain told Sky Sports that it was time for Buttler to resign and “England to move on.”

Head coach Brendon McCullum copped a fair share of criticism from the media and pundits as well. The former Kiwi batter, who was previously the coach for the Test team, took over the reigns of the teams for white-ball formats as well recently in January. He replaced Matthew Motts, who was sacked because of the team’s miserable performance during his reign.
The I Paper ran a piece titled “Brendon McCullum’s strength as England coach has become a weakness.” Another scathing peice from The Cricketer ridiculling the Bazball approach was headlined “Those behind England’s hubristic philosophy need a reality check.” The Wisden provided a reality check to McCullum’s reign as coach and ran a peice titled “Familiar failings make one thing clear: England have gone backwards since McCullum took over.”
