India’s 15-year-old tennis sensation Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi has created history of sorts, as she made it to the main draw of the WTA 125 event, Mumbai Open on Sunday, after posting a thrilling win over world no. 427 American Jessica Failla. The Indian won in three sets 7-6, 1-6, 6-4, to progress to the main round now.
Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi in Main Round
Earlier on Saturday, she had created a massive upset when she got the better of world no. 265, Italy’s Nicole Fossa Huergo 6-3, 3-6, 6-0. That also means, she will now earn her first points on the WTA circuit. What is surprising is, she didn’t even make the cut for the qualifiers, and was only handed out a wildcard for it.
Other Indians at WTA Mumbai Open
For the past few months, the teenage sensation has been training at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, and the results are there for everyone to see. She told HT, “In the past two years, my height has increased and I have become more physically dominant on court. But my time (at the academy) has started to help me make better decisions on court.”
Meanwhile, apart from Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi, S Bhamidipaty, S Yamalapalli, Ankita Raina and V Adkar will be part of the main draw as well; all wildcard entrants. World no. 90, Germany’s Tatjana Maria will be the first seed player in the tournament, while the former world no. 38 Canadian R Marino will be the second seed.
