Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar used a creative analogy to criticise Glenn Maxwell’s batting form in the IPL, likening the Australian all-rounder’s rare good performances to the appearance of Halley’s Comet. Manjrekar suggested that Maxwell scores impactful knocks as infrequently as Halley’s Comet, which is visible from Earth once every 75 years.

Glenn Maxwell’s form struggles

Maxwell’s struggles with the bat have been a concern since IPL 2024, ultimately leading to his release from Royal Challengers Bengaluru before the 2025 mega auction, despite being a fan favourite. Now playing for Punjab Kings (PBKS), Maxwell has managed only 37 runs in three matches this season, with a notable 30-run contribution against Rajasthan Royals.

Speaking to JioHotstar, Manjrekar drew the comparison: “Halley’s Comet orbits the sun and is visible from Earth once every 75 years. Just like that, Glenn Maxwell plays one good match in 75 games. It was last seen in 1986, and it will now be spotted in 2061. It’s the same case with Maxwell in batting. Glenn Maxwell is Halley’s Comet of Cricket.”

Contributions with the ball

While Maxwell has struggled with the bat, he has provided some value with the ball. He has taken two crucial wickets this season, dismissing key figures like Rishabh Pant of Lucknow Super Giants and Shubman Gill of Gujarat Giants.

PBKS and Maxwell’s need for improvement

Despite his occasional contributions with the ball, Maxwell’s lack of form with the bat was felt in PBKS’s recent 50-run defeat against Rajasthan Royals.
